Right now there a case before the Supreme Court concerning the Same-sex Sodomy ban in Texas. This has the potential to be a landmark case. In 1986, this same court upheld a ruling permitting states to ban gay-sodomy but not breeder-sodomy. Now growing up in Texas as a gay male, this tends to affect me somewhat.

Texas is claiming that this ban is perfectly reasonable. Why?? Because, as Texas claims, with a man and a woman, "sodomy" can lead to other "relations" leading to children. Ok.... so now all sex HAS to lead to children. WHATEVER.

This ruling can go either way. The court has changed considerably since 1996 and public opinion has changed a WHOLE lot. A ruling is expected before June. Of course the Republicans are dreading the possibility of the ban being overturned because, they claim, it would encourage and endorse being gay. So basically, people will "turn gay" if they can can LEGALLY have sex. Hmm... last time I checked, I didn't choose to be gay. But the, of course, the 60 year old, heterosexual, married man knows more about being gay than the 19 year old gay man. LOL. That would be like me claiming to know more about being a 40 year old black woman with her own tv show and expansive fortune than Oprah would.

As a gay man, I can only hope that people will finally wake up and realize that I pay the same taxes they do and should be treated the same as them. Unfortunately, that is not the case now and the only way I will get the same rights is through a court ruling such as the one being considered now. After all, it won't come through an election, most people aren't gay, so they are far less likely to vote in favor of gay men in anything. Besides, even though no one says it, we live in a DEEPLY segregated society. Don't belive me? Religion is the core of many people's beliefs and look at how racially segregated churches are on Sunday morning. And that's only when it comes to race.. an obvious thing that you can instantly see, not a person's sexually orientation (NOT preference).

Remember, Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered only five years ago.
